Want to Win the Illustrious BetterPhoto Photo Contest? Start Here.
If you’ve ever wondered why some photos take the top prize and others don’t make the cut, you’re not alone. This guide is here to pull back the curtain on what we look for in the BetterPhoto.com contests—and how you can improve your odds.
Our contest is judged in multiple rounds by a panel of experienced photographers. With so many incredible images submitted every month, even standout shots sometimes don’t make it through. That’s how competitive it is.
The winners you see on our site all have something in common: they excel in the qualities we value most—strong lighting, vibrant color, thoughtful composition, sharp focus, and compelling creativity. Below, we’ll break down what helps a photo rise to the top.
1. Follow the Rules (Seriously)
Start with the basics: read the contest guidelines. The most common disqualification? Uploading more than one image a day. We only judge the first, so if you submit five in a row, four are automatically skipped—no matter how good they are.
2. Keep It Sharp
Sharpness is one of the first things we look at. If an image is out of focus—unless that blur is intentional and clearly artistic—it’s usually eliminated early. We see:
- Obvious, unintentional blur (often from camera shake)
- Slightly soft images that lack the “wow” factor
That said, not all blur is bad. If it’s used creatively—think motion blur or shallow depth of field—it can elevate an image. But it has to be done with purpose.
3. Nail the Exposure
Monitors vary, but clarity still matters. If your photo is too dark, washed out, or lacking detail in the shadows and highlights, it can hurt your chances.
Ask yourself:
- Are the colors accurate and pleasing?
- Can I clearly see details?
- Is the photo bright or dark in a distracting way?
Even in black and white images, tonal balance and contrast are key.
4. Go Digital (the Smart Way)
If you shoot digitally or scan film, light editing can help—but don’t overdo it. A little sharpening, contrast correction, or retouching is fine. Knowing how to use tools like “Unsharp Mask,” “Smart Sharpen,” or “Levels” in your editing software can make a huge difference.
Tips:
- Save JPEGs at high quality—avoid heavy compression.
- Eliminate distractions like dust or stray borders before uploading.
- If you scan film, learn to keep contrast in check so your lights and darks stay balanced.
5. Show Artistic Vision
We’re looking for more than just technically good images. Great photos make us feel something. That comes from artistic vision.
Consider:
- Did you use creative techniques like unusual framing, unique lighting, or intentional motion?
- Is your subject compelling, funny, or unexpected?
- Do the lines, colors, and forms add visual interest?
Photos that surprise us or make us see something familiar in a new way tend to stand out.
6. Keep It Clean and Focused
When it comes to presentation:
- Avoid heavy borders. They usually distract rather than enhance.
- If you watermark your photo, make sure the text doesn’t overpower the image. Choose a font color that blends in rather than shouts.
7. Titles & Descriptions Matter (A Little)
While the image speaks loudest, a well-chosen title or brief description can add context or emotion. Keep it simple. Don’t try to explain the photo—let it speak for itself.
8. No Ads, Please
Photos that include visible logos, brand names, or trademarks will be disqualified. Keep the focus on your artistry, not products.
9. Learn from the Best
If you want to get better, study the winning images. Ask yourself:
- Why does this photo work?
- What choices did the photographer make?
- What’s the emotional or artistic pull?
Use the winning photos as a free masterclass.
The Spirit of BetterPhoto Contests
Here’s what we believe in:
- Quality over credentials. We judge photos, not reputations.
- Openness to all styles and subjects. A photo of your child or cat can be just as powerful as a mountain landscape.
- Respect for creative tools. We welcome digital editing—if used with care and intention.
Above all, we’re looking for beauty, honesty, and creativity. Keep shooting, keep experimenting, and most of all—have fun.
We can’t wait to see what you’ll share next.
